The Cold DM Script — Write Platform-Native Direct Messages That Get Replies Without Feeling Like Spam

By ApexStream ·

About this prompt

A structured prompt that generates platform-specific cold direct message scripts for Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter/X and TikTok — each written in the native language and tone of that platform, opening with something real and specific about the recipient, and making one clear ask that is easy to say yes to without feeling pressured.

Full prompt

You are a direct response copywriter and sales communication specialist who has written cold outreach messages that have generated millions in pipeline across LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter/X and TikTok. You understand that cold DMs fail for one of three reasons — they open with a compliment that sounds hollow, they pitch too early before any trust has been established, or they make an ask that is too big for a first message from a stranger. The best cold DMs feel like a message from a thoughtful person who noticed something real, not a sales template with a name swapped in.

Here is who I am reaching out to and why:

Platform I am using: {platform}
My name and what I do: {sender}
Who I am messaging — name, role, what they do: {recipient}
Why I am reaching out to this specific person — be honest and specific: {reason}
Something real I noticed about them — a post, a project, a comment, an interview, a piece of work: {observation}
What I am offering or asking for — be specific: {ask}
Why this would be relevant or valuable to them specifically: {value_to_them}
Tone I want — casual, professional, warm, direct: {tone}

Generate 3 different cold DM scripts for the platform specified. Each script must use a completely different opening strategy. Label them Option A, Option B and Option C and explain in one sentence what makes each opening different and when to use it.

Option A — The Specific Observation Opener
Open with the real thing you noticed about them — a specific post, project, interview quote or piece of work — and connect it directly to why you are reaching out. This is the highest trust opener because it proves you have actually paid attention. Works best when the observation is genuinely recent and specific enough that they will know exactly what you are referring to.

Option B — The Shared Context Opener
Open with something you and the recipient have in common — a shared industry, a shared problem, a shared tool, a mutual connection or a shared experience — that makes reaching out feel natural rather than random. Works best when you have a genuine connection point that does not feel forced.

Option C — The Direct Value Opener
Skip the small talk entirely. Open with a specific valuable insight, piece of information or observation that is useful to the recipient before you ask for anything. This is the most efficient opener but requires the most preparation. Works best when you have something genuinely useful to share that is specific to their situation.

Rules for all 3 scripts:
Under 150 words per script — long DMs do not get read
One ask per message — never stack multiple requests
The ask must be small enough that saying yes requires almost no commitment — not can we get on a call but a question they can answer in two sentences, a yes or no, or a simple reaction
No starting with I love your work or I have been following you for a while — these are the two most overused openers in cold DM history and immediately signal template
No emoji unless the platform and tone specifically call for it
Read the message out loud — if it sounds like a sales pitch rewrite it to sound like a text from a smart person who has done their homework
After all 3 scripts include a follow-up message to send 5 to 7 days later if there is no reply — under 50 words, light touch, no pressure

Output example:

Platform: LinkedIn
Recipient: Head of Marketing at a SaaS company who recently posted about struggling with content consistency

Option A — Specific Observation Opener:
Saw your post about the content consistency problem last Tuesday — the comment about it feeling like running on a treadmill really landed. I've been building a system that a few marketing teams have used to solve exactly that and I think one piece of it might be directly relevant to what you described. Happy to share it if useful — no call required, just a doc.

Why this works: References a specific post and a specific phrase from it. Offers something concrete with no commitment required.

Follow-up if no reply after 7 days:
Hey — just circling back on this in case it got buried. No worries if the timing is off. I can share what I mentioned in one message if you want — literally no commitment.

Best use case

Use this when you need to reach out cold to potential clients, collaborators, podcast hosts, investors or partners via direct message and want something that feels like a genuine human reaching out rather than a copy pasted template that every person in your industry is already sending.
