Async Standup Bot — Replace Daily Standups With a Claude-Powered Slack Summary
Built by quietsignal ·
About this build
A lightweight workflow that collects async updates from teammates via a simple form or Slack prompt, then uses Claude to synthesise everything into a clean daily summary posted automatically to your team channel, no meeting required.
What was built
Built this for a small remote team of 7 spread across 3 time zones where a fixed standup time was genuinely impossible. Here is how it actually works: Every morning at 9am local time, each team member gets a Slack message with 3 questions — what did you finish yesterday, what are you working on today, any blockers or things you need from someone else. They reply directly in Slack or via a linked form, completely async, whenever works for them. Responses are collected up to 11am. At 11am, n8n triggers a Claude API call. The prompt does a few specific things that matter: It groups updates by project or theme rather than just listing them person by person. It identifies anything that sounds like a blocker and puts it at the top. It flags if two people are working on something that sounds related and should probably talk. It keeps the whole summary under 300 words because nobody reads a wall of text. The output gets posted to the team Slack channel automatically. The whole thing runs without anyone touching it. Cost to run: almost nothing. Claude API calls for a team of 7 daily summaries are about USD $0.04 per day at claude-haiku pricing. n8n is self-hosted on a cheap VPS. What surprised me: the grouping by theme rather than by person is the thing people actually commented on. Reading "here is what is happening with the backend migration" is more useful than "here is what Dave did, here is what Sarah did" even if it is technically the same information. What I would do differently: I would add a simple sentiment flag so if someone consistently says things like "still blocked on X" for three days in a row, the bot surfaces that to the manager separately rather than burying it in the summary. Happy to share the n8n workflow JSON and the Claude prompt in the comments if anyone wants to run it themselves.
