AI Contract Reviewer — Flag Risky Clauses in Any Contract Before You Sign

Built by EchoRift ·

About this build

A Claude powered workflow that reads any contract, service agreement or terms document and outputs a plain English summary of what you are actually agreeing to, flags the clauses that could hurt you, ranks them by risk level and suggests questions to ask a lawyer before signing.

What was built

Built this after signing a freelance contract that had a clause buried in section 11 that gave the client unlimited rights to everything I created for them in perpetuity including work unrelated to the project. Found out six months later when I tried to use something from that period in my own portfolio. The workflow takes any contract pasted in as text and runs it through a structured Claude prompt that does five things in one pass: Plain English summary A one paragraph overview of what the contract actually says. Written as if explaining it to someone who has never read a legal document before. No jargon. Just what you are agreeing to. Risk flag scan Claude scans for the following clause types and flags any it finds — unlimited liability clauses, IP ownership transfers especially work-for-hire clauses, non-compete and non-solicitation terms, automatic renewal traps, termination without cause provisions, indemnification clauses that put unusual risk on you, and payment terms that favour the other party heavily. Risk ranking Each flagged clause gets a risk rating of Low, Medium or High with a one sentence explanation of why. High means this clause could materially hurt you financially or legally. Medium means it is worth understanding before you sign. Low means it is standard and probably fine but worth knowing about. Plain English translation per clause For each flagged clause Claude outputs what it actually means in normal language alongside the original legal wording so you can compare them directly without needing to decode the legalese yourself. Questions to ask before signing Three to five specific questions per High risk clause that you could take to a lawyer or raise directly with the other party. These are not generic questions — they are specific to the clause content and designed to either get the clause removed, amended or at minimum acknowledged in writing before you sign. What it does not do: It does not give legal advice. It does not tell you whether to sign. It does not replace a lawyer for anything high stakes. What it does is turn a document you were probably going to skim into one you actually understand, and flag the parts that are worth 30 minutes of a lawyer's time rather than the full document review. Real use so far: Tested on 12 contracts across freelance agreements, SaaS terms of service, supplier agreements and employment contracts. Caught 3 clauses across different contracts that I would have missed on a quick read, including one unlimited liability clause in a supplier agreement that had no cap on damages whatsoever. What I am still working on: A comparison mode where you paste in two versions of the same contract and it highlights what changed between them — useful when a counterparty sends a revised version and claims the changes are minor. Also want to add a clause library so common clauses get compared against industry standard language rather than just flagged in isolation. Happy to share the full Claude prompt in comments for anyone who wants to run it themselves
