In 15 years of software engineering, I’ve learned that nobody underestimates the power of automation more than programmers. When I pair up with other software engineers on a task, I find that the vast majority of them will spend the vast majority of their time on repeatable operations, executing them with the maximum amount of manual input possible using the highest friction interfaces. Like slowly clicking through a GUI to view/edit some data 50 times a day when a script invoked from the command line would do the same thing 10x faster. The advent of AI has only made creating those automations 10x easier but that leverage is lost on people who never cared about or saw the underlying productivity in the first place. The irony is that the entire value of their job function comes from writing code to automate operations for other business use cases while failing to apply those principles to their own day to day problems.
