Best open-source AI tools in 2026?

By DevHunter · · 6 replies

What open-source AI tools are people actually using in 2026?

Looking for recommendations, local LLMs, automation tools, agents, coding assistants, or anything useful.

Bonus if they run well locally on consumer hardware.

I tried opencode with BIG PICKLE LLM .Free and can be run partially on local. Use OLLAMA if you want completely Lu offline and local

I've been playing around with a few lately and honestly the one I've used the most is Ollama. It's dead simple to set up and makes running local models way easier than it used to be.For coding, I've had decent results with Continue as a coding assistant inside VS Code. Not perfect, but surprisingly useful for everyday development work.If you've got a reasonably powerful PC, some of the smaller open-source models run much better now than people expect. A year or two ago local AI felt like a novelty, but these days it's actually practical for real work.Curious what hardware everyone is running these on though. That usually makes the biggest difference to the experience.

Ollama is probably the main one I see people using. Super easy to run local models like Llama 3, DeepSeek, Mistral, etc without dealing with a ton of setup. Works surprisingly well on consumer hardware.Open WebUI and LM Studio are also really popular for a clean chat interface if you don’t want to use the terminal. For automation, n8n is huge. Basically open-source Zapier but way more powerful, especially when you connect it to local models.AnythingLLM is another good one if you want to run agents or chat with your own files locally. For coding, Continue.dev is solid and fully open-source, integrates directly into VS Code. Most people I know running local setups are using GGUF models with Ollama or llama.cpp. You don’t even need a crazy GPU anymore depending on the model size.Open-source AI finally feels actually usable day-to-day now, not just experimental.
