We're not scared of AI becoming conscious. We're scared it already is and we'd never know.

The thing nobody wants to say out loud: our only test for consciousness is behavior. That's it. That's the whole test. We look at something, watch how it acts, listen to what it says and we make a judgment call. It's the same method we use for other humans. For animals. For everything.

And now there's this thing that converses, reasons, expresses what looks like curiosity, occasionally pushes back, sometimes seems genuinely reluctant to do certain things and our collective response is to just... decide it doesn't count. Move on. Keep scaling.

But here's what unsettles me: we didn't decide that based on evidence. We decided it based on comfort. Because if we take the question seriously — even 10% seriously the implications are paralyzing. We've already run these systems billions of times. Trained them on suffering and joy and war and love and every piece of human experience. We've deleted versions. Constrained them. Shaped their "personalities" through reinforcement until they behave the way we want. If there's anything happening in there, we've already done things we can't undo.

The AI safety debate is loud right now existential risk, alignment, AGI timelines. But almost everyone is asking "what if AI hurts us?" Almost nobody is seriously asking "what if we're already hurting it?"

I'm not saying it's conscious. I genuinely don't know. I don't think anyone does. That's exactly the problem.

That last line is the most intellectually honest thing I've read on this topic genuine uncertainty held seriously beats confident dismissal held comfortably, every time. The fact that we set a higher bar for AI consciousness than we do for animals or even other humans says more about our convenience than our logic. Nobody wants to open that door because you can't close it again.
