When did the standard change?

By Lechlan · · 1 replies

Something that I've noticed is how quickly Usb-A to Usb-c chargers were phased out for Usb-c to Usb-c chargers but was wondering when exactly that became the standard for phone chargers. I figured it was sometime around 2022-2024 but someone told me that it was 2020 so if anyone can find an article or something that'd be appreciated because I can't figure out how to rephrase the question in a way that'll get Google to get me the information I'm looking for 😁

From what I remember, there wasn't really a single switch date. USB-C ports on phones became common years earlier, but USB-C to USB-C cables and chargers really started becoming the default around 2022–2023 as more manufacturers adopted USB Power Delivery and stopped including USB-A chargers. Apple moving to USB-C and the EU charger regulations also accelerated the transition. So your 2022–2024 estimate sounds pretty reasonable.
