58% of searches ending without clicks and Google's solution is to just put more AI on top of the AI, bold strategy let's see if it works 😂
Genuine question because I've seen this take everywhere lately and I honestly can't tell if it's real or just people being alarmist. Google's own stats show that 58% of searches now end without any clicks because of AI Overviews answering everything upfront. Some sites have reportedly lost 20 to 40% of their traffic since AI summaries started appearing at the top of results. But here's what confuses me. I'm still using Google every single day. Most people I know are still using Google every single day. So is the "Google is dying" narrative actually supported by what's happening or is it just a story that tech people love telling? A few things I'm genuinely curious about: Has anyone actually shifted their search habits away from Google and towards ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude for most queries? Like properly switched, not just occasionally. If you're in Australia, does the Google AI Overview experience feel any different to you compared to just reading a normal search result? I feel like the answers are fine for simple stuff but completely fall apart the moment you ask anything niche or current. And for anyone running a website or business, have you actually noticed a traffic drop from the AI Overview stuff or is that more of a US-specific problem so far? Keen to hear what people are actually experiencing rather than what the think pieces are saying.
