the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra announcement has been getting a lot of attention and most of the conversation is about the usual spec comparisons but the thing that caught my attention is something slightly different
the camera system on this phone is now genuinely competing with entry level mirrorless cameras for everyday photography in a way that feels different from the usual smartphone camera marketing
for the past decade the line has always been that smartphones are convenient but if you actually care about quality you use a real camera
that line is getting harder to defend and the S27 Ultra is probably the clearest example yet
the question i keep coming back to is whether this is just incremental progress or whether we are approaching an actual inflection point where the average person has absolutely no practical reason to own a separate camera
for professionals and enthusiasts the dedicated camera argument still holds but the addressable market for dedicated cameras was never really professionals, it was the person who wanted better than smartphone but was not going full professional setup
that middle market is quietly disappearing and the S27 Ultra is probably the device that pushes a lot of fence-sitters off permanently
what do people here think is there still a meaningful reason to own a dedicated camera in 2026 or has the smartphone finally won that argument for most people
